Road Trip Wednesday: Who's Your Favorite

YA Highway is hosting a road trip today and I happened to stumble across it. If you'd like to "stumble" across it, here's the link.

Road Trip Wednesday is a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where YA Highway's contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question that begs to be answered. In the comments, you can hop from destination to destination and get everybody's unique take on the topic.

So, here's the question:

Who are your favorite literary villains/antagonists, and why?

First off, while I think of my answer and slush through the many villains/antagonists in my mind who have tricked me into liking them and then made me want to spit fire at them, I'll tell you the kind of villains that really scream EVIL. The tricky ones. The ones who make you, as a reader, not sure if you love them or hate them. The ones who confuse you just enough to cause you to be indecisive about who they really are and then BAM they've gone and done a dastardly deed when you just thought you were beginning to trust them.

My Favorite literary villains/antagonists are:

CAMERON BRIEL (Cam) from Fallen by Lauren Kate

                                               And

DAMON SALVATORE from Vampire Diaries series by L.J. Smith

Both confused me as I read, watching their characters in my mind show strength, resilience, craftiness and hints of what could look like love. Then, the curtain was lifted and in one hugely selfish deed, I got to see them for who they really are: Villains! To me, that's a true villain, one you don't even see coming!

What about you? Who's your favorite villain?

MY WIP 48,253 words so far

  1. I thought of Cam too, but I'm just not sure about him yet...
Damen is the bad boy we hate to love, but he's also got that softer side.

  2. I love the tricky ones, too! When you as a reader are constantly re-evaluating how you feel about the character (along with the protagonist) that makes the read even more satisfying.

And (at least in the case of Damon) they're easy on the eyes, too :)

  3. Maybe it's the teenager in me who's attracted to the "bad boys". :) But yes, the 95% bad with 5% good gets me every time in a villain.

  4. I haven't read the Vampire Diaries books, but from the show I have such a hard time viewing Damon as a villain. I'm pretty sure if I were friends with those two boys I wouldn't give his brother a second look. I'm not sure I would think the same if I had only read the book but, c'mon, he's kind of gorgeous. :)

  5. Yes, from the show, I'd go for Damon. He seems stronger and just more capable. But in the books, at least the first three that I've read, he causes lots of pain and hardship for Elana. LOTS. :)

  6. I haven't read either of these. However, I've seen VD, so I'm going with Damon ;)

  7. Funny. I should do a poll huh? Of all the people who've watched Vampire Dairies, if they had the option, which brother would they pick. I wonder if Damon would win.
