Re-Introduce Myself

Today is the Re-Introduce Myself Blog Fest in which I tell you a little bit about myself and hopefully make a few friends in the process. :) If you want to join in on the fun you can go here to sign up.

So here's a little about me you may not already know:

I don't like to cook, but most nights I prepare dinner from scratch. While taking classes to become a doula, I learned the risks of eating processed, chemical-filled meals. So I try to give my family nutritional foods with a side of yummy. But, last summer when my kids went to CA for two weeks to visit their grandparents, my hubby and I made a trip to the grocery store and filled our cart with quick-cooking junk food. And we chemicaled it up for those two weeks! So yeah, I highly dislike cooking, but I do it because I care. And because when those breaks from healthy-eating come, they are totally worth the wait! ;)

    1. Oh yes, In-N-Out. Whenever we're visiting family in CA, we stop by and grab a meal. :)

  3. I'm not much of a cook, either. I'm too busy writing to care. Fortunately my hubby enjoys cooking and is into healthy eating. Okay, most of the time it's 'fortunately he enjoys cooking'. Sometimes his food is scary. :P

  4. I love to cook but often run out of energy by the time the four other people who live in my huse (husband - three kids) are hungry :( Not a lot of processed foods but a very early bedtime :)

  5. I like the idea of that diet. Maybe I would stick with it longer if I knew I could totally splurge for two guilt free weeks every couple of months. Yeah, I hate to cook, too. But, love to eat home cook meals so unless I have my mother move in with me, I have to cook. Nice meeting you, Rachel.

  6. At the start of this month I decided that I wanted to make a concerted effort to work produce into every meal I ate. It worked...for about a week. O_o I've been eating a lot of processed unhealthy garbage lately, and I'd like that to change.

  7. I get comments from the employees at the grocery store about the amount of raw foods that I buy and the lack of processed crap. Evidently, it really stands out.

  8. I generally cook from scratch too. But I have to say, those splurges are fun.

  9. For many, many years, I cooked from scratch.
In recent years, a hectic lifestyle has resulted in an eating-on-the-run diet... something I NEVER dreamed I'd ever get caught up in... and it's no excuse anyway...

  10. Hi, Rachel,

It's nice to meet you. I think you cooking "chemical free" is very wise. With obesity in our youth running rampant, it's a parent like you that will teach your kids healthy habits that will hopefully stay with them for a lifetime. Like you, I am not a HAPPY cook, but i do to stay healthy. A few years ago, after putting on a ton of weight I had decided it was time be take my life back.... I have been an advocate for health and fitness ever since.

  14. So, how did you feel after all those chemicals. I would image you were pretty sick. We generally eat pretty healthy, but not when we travel (for which we bring meds). It's nice to meet you. I am a new follower. I did the blog fest too, linked mine to my name.

    1. You're right. I did feel fairly unwell. So much so that I yearned for clean food again! Ha!

  15. Ha, I like the fact you had a sneaky binge on junk food behind your kids' back. Kind of a role reversal! Nice to meet you again. I'm sure I have been here before... I will have to visit more regularly!

  16. Hmmm...reminds me I had some of that oily fried chicken for lunch, when I should have known better. There's always tomorrow though. Nice to meet you.

  17. I'm surprised you were able to stomach junk food after eating healthy. Healthy food tastes so much better.

  18. Hey, Rachel!

I could've used you eight years back while in the throws of child labor. And props to you for cooking and eating healthy. I should do the same, but just haven't found the will to do so. Maybe if I hangout on your blog long enough, you'll rub off on me. It's great meeting you! :)

  19. I can't cook at all. It's just not on my priority list - I can only juggle so much and that doesn't make the cut. But I'm impressed by those who can.

    Nice to meet you!

    1. Nice to meet you too! My MIL was a self-professed "preparer", not a cook. But after she retired, she started taking cooking classes, and now she's teaching me things!

  20. I'm impressed that you're putting such an effort into making sure your kids eat good foods when you don't even like cooking--and I'm also impressed that you're in the process of becoming a doula. Good luck with both! (And with being able to sneak in the occasional bad food binge!)

    1. Thanks! I am a doula, though. Took that class years ago. :)

  25. Haaa, I don't like to cook either! It's an ongoing puzzle. But like you, I cook pretty much from scratch--maybe that's why. It's not just a matter of opening a few boxes and cans. More work!
